Stand by Assignment | West York Fire Dept. Station 1
April 17, 2010
At the request of West York Fire Department, a crew of four members from United H&L33 to stand by for thier awards banquet. While on the stand by, the Crew of four being Kevin Moul, Austin Staub,John Livingston and Lt. Mike Schrum staffed Truck 1. At 21:56 hours a box alarm was dispatched by York County for a chimney fire on Taxville Road to assist Shiloh and Lincolnway fire companies. Lincolnway Chief 5-1 went on scene with a 2 story family dwelling with smoke showing from the eves. Chief 5-1 upgraded the box to a working fire. Truck 1 arrived, placed the aerial ladder in service, Firefighters Livingston, Moul and two firemen from WYFD advanced a 300 foot 1.75" hand line into the structures 2nd story, while Staub and Lt. Schrum began truck operations. The interior crew found normal conditions inside. Firefighters Staub and Lt.Schrum were on the truck platform preparing to go to the roof when the unthinkable happened. The chimney supports gave away and the chimney collapsed into the house. The crew on the inside was on a 2nd story loft when the chimney came crashing down within two feet of them. No injuries to the members fortunately. The chimney collapsed about 8 minutes into the dispatch, and only three to four minutes from time Truck 1 arrived on scene. Truck 33 was dispatched to transfer to the Shiloh Fire Dept. A special thanks to Samantha Leiphart for use of these pictures.
